More than 500 million pieces of Scripture are distributed annually
The Bible in its complete form or portions of it is available in 2,233 languages, according to the 1999 Scripture Language Report issued by the United Bible Societies.
The first Bible Society was founded 1804, named the British and Foreign Bible Society Mission. The United Bible Societies was founded in 1946 at conference in Haywards Heath, England. It 127 member Bible Societies work in more than 200 countries and territories. They are currently involved in projects in 685 languages, in which a part of the Bible is being translated for the first time in 468 languages.
During 1998 - the latest available figures - worldwide distribution through National Societies totalled 20.8 million complete Bibles, 20.1 million New Testaments, 19.4 million Portions (at least one book of the Bible), 16.5 million New Reader Portions, 35.5 million New Reader Selections, and an amazing 472.7 million Selections (less than one book of the Bible). Distribution in China rose to almost 2.4 million Bibles. Distribution in the Middle East also saw an increase. In total, Bibles distributed in 1998 reached 20,751,515. In all, Bible Societies around the world distributed 585,023,708 pieces of Scripture. No, that is not a typo: that's more than 585 million pieces of Scripture.

The printed Bible
In 1525 and 1526, William Tyndale completed an English translation of the 1519 and 1522 editions of the Erasmus Greek New Testament. Johannes Gutenberg had introduced his printing press in 1454, so now Tyndale's translations could be printed. It is thought that some 6000 copies were made of Tyndale's Bible but were destroyed because of official opposition to it. In 1530, Tyndale published a translation of the Pentateuch. In 1531, he published Jonah and selections from the Old Testament. In 1534 and 1535, he printed revised editions of his New Testament translations.

Tyndale continued to work on translations of the Old Testament, working from the Hebrew and Latin text and Luther's German translation, but died before he could complete it.
In Tyndale's time, George Joye also translated portions of the Bible into English. In 1534, he published a revision of Tyndale's New Testament - with changes of which Tyndale did not approve. Joye also published translations of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. *

In 1535, Miles Coverdale, working from the European continent, published the first English translation of the entire Bible. Coverdale was a writers' writer, delivering his translation in beautifully constructed phrasing. The Coverdale translation was a remarkable contribution to the English Bible and the English language.
Many English translations of the Bible would follow as the language developed and discoveries of the origins of the Bible were made. The Geneva Bible was published in 1560, the Authorised (King James) version in 1611, the American Standard Edition in 1901, The Bible in Modern English in 1903, Today's English Version (Good News for Modern Man) in 1966, and the New International Version in 1972. Printing errors in the Bible
In a 1631 edition of the King James Bible, in Exodus 20 verse 14, the word not was left out. This changed the 7th commandment to read, Thou shalt commit adultery. Most of the copies were recalled immediately and destroyed on the orders of Charles I. But there are 11 copies still remaining. They are known as the Wicked Bible. (The Bible museum in Branson, Missouri has one on display.) The printer was fined the equivelant of 400.
The word not was also left out in the 1653 edition. In 1 Corinthians 6 verse 9 it was printed: Know ye not that the unrighteous shall inherit the kingdom of God - instead of Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Again it was recalled immediately (- dashing the hopes of many!). It is known as the Unrighteous Bible.
The Murderer's Bible, printed in 1801, declared: these are murderers (instead of murmurers) and continued, let the children first be killed (instead of filled.)
Perhaps the error in Psalm 119 verse 161 in a 1702 version summed it all up: instead of princes it read, printers have persecuted me. It is known as the Printer's Bible.
The first book that Johannes Gutenberg printed in 1454 was the Bible. It is thought that he printed about 180 copies, known as the 42-line Bible, of which significant parts of 48 copies still survive. Gutenberg did not make any printing errors. *

The world's libraries store more than a 100 million original volumes, 24 million of those in the US Library of Congress.
Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country in the world, but Britain publishes the most titles: in total about 100,000 per year. About 60,000 book titles are published annually in the US.
Amazon.com is the world's biggest book store, holding some 2.5 million titles.
