Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said on Sunday that his decision to withdraw from this week's presidential runoff was motivated by the of violence - including rape, torture, murder, arson and abductions - by ruling party militants. The violence and intimidation that has caused terror in rural areas, erupted in full view of international election observers in the capital on Sunday when thousands of President Robert Mugabe's feared youth brigades went on a rampage to prevent the opposition from holding a rally. The government blames the Movement for Democratic Change for the violence, but most observers and groups like Amnesty International say much of it is fomented by soldiers and militants loyal to Mugabe. Mugabe had likened the re-election campaign to a war. His top security commanders have said they will not serve under Tsvangirai. Tsvangirai said that Mugabe has declared war, and they will not be part of that war.

The bonuses of another five senior executives would be halved. Moosa said Eskom was reviewing the criteria it uses to determine bonuses. A Swiss court has ordered that a chicken be locked up in a soundproof box every night so its neighbours can get a good night's sleep, the ATS news agency reported. The court at Ticino in southern Switzerland even stipulated that the box, in which the chicken must be kept from 10.00pm to 7.00am, should be at least eight centimetres thick and insulated with glass wool. The decision ends a five-year battle between the authorities in the village of Sant'Antonio and the chicken's owner. The authorities, alerted by complaints from neighbours, earlier ordered that the bird be put in a henhouse at night. The measure, however, was found to be pointless.

She had a stopped at a traffic light when 3 men approached her car and broke the drivers window. The hijackers yanked out her car keys, opened her door and threw her out of the car. An unknown man stopped his bakkie horizontally in front of the car and rushed to help her, then a taxi full of people stopped behind her car. The people jumped out of the taxi, pulled the three hijackers from her car and gave them a thorough beating. The car's spare keys were in her handbag in the boot of the car. She opened the boot and took out the spare keys, jumped in her car and sped off. On her way the taxi drove next to her, they showed her the cellphone and her car keys, which they gave to her through the cars broken window. President John Kufuor of Ghana has come under heavy criticism after leaked documents show that his government spent 33 000 on a medal which was used to decorate him at a national awards ceremony. Kufuor created a new award category, the Grand Order of the Star and Eagles of Ghana to the annual list of awards, explaining that it was only for people who render outstanding services in the presidential job, starting with himself. But just as the controversy over the president's award was dying down, it was revealed that the medal cost 33 000 and that five of them were ordered from British-based Cleave and Company International. The leaked document also indicated that about 1.4m was spent on the medals for the national awards ceremony. This has sparked another round of criticism for Kufuor, who will leave office in about six months. Responding to the mounting criticism, a statement from the Office of the President said the furore was politically motivated, especially as the country prepares to vote in polls in December.

DNA tests confirmed that a body found off the coast of Brazil is that of a priest who disappeared while flying over the Atlantic buoyed by hundreds of brightly colored party balloons, authorities said Tuesday. The Rev. Adelir Antonio de Carli set off from the Brazilian port city of Paranagua on April 20 strapped to 1,000 helium-filled balloons in an attempt to raise money to build a rest stop and worship center for truckers. But the 41-year-old Roman Catholic priest soon lost contact with his ground team, and the cluster of yellow, orange, pink and white balloons was found in the water a day later. Tugboat workers discovered a body off Rio de Janeiro in early July that authorities believed belonged to the cleric. Medical examiner worker Rosane Alves said Tuesday that tests comparing DNA samples from de Carli's brother to the body confirmed their suspicions. *

Crocs banned from hospital

Trendy Crocs sandals have been banned from hospitals by health chiefs over fears they might cause heart attacks or damage life support machines.

Health Authority safety officers in Austria have warned all staff that the distinctive plastic shoes can generate massive amounts of static electricty.

The electricity can discharge itself directly into patients or short circuit vital medical equipment, says the warning from the Viennese Hospital Authority.

Static discharge could wipe out the computer memories and data processing functions of life-saving equipment, rendering it useless.

Now the city's biggest hospital - SMZ Ost with 2,800 employees - has already banned the shoes from operating theatres and the casualty department.

The soft, vinyl sandals have become a hit with medics, as well as celebrities like Al Pacino and Batman star Morgan Freeman.

But the Viennese Hospital Authority safety spokesman Peter Woelfl said Crocs would stay banned until they could be made anti-static.

Those sandals can cause an electric shock in organs. They can also lead to crashes of data processing devices, he said.

We hold a technical opinion which says that those sandals are made of materials which are not antistatic. This means they do not match our safety requirements, he added.

Ernst Widmann, head of Crocs in Austria, said: This is insane. I haven't heard of a single incident where Crocs caused a critical incident in hospitals.

Employees of the National Lotteries Board, who signed a petition calling for the resignation of the board's chief executive, Vevek Ram, have until today to unconditionally apologise for the petition, or face dismissal. The move by Andre van Niekerk - who chaired the disciplinary hearings of the 39 employees after they were charged with insubordination - has angered the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (Nupsaw). The union has alleged that Van Niekerk has taken sides with the NLB over the petition, instead of finding the employees guilty or not guilty. Nupsaw provincial organiser Maurice Makatu said by not reaching a verdict on the charges against the employees, Van Niekerk was not fulfilling his mandate, but simply threatening and victimising employees into withdrawing their statements. The union and the employees had also accused Ram of delaying proceeds to beneficiaries without communicating his reasons for withholding such payments. They blamed Ram for the negative publicity the board has received in stalling the process of disbursing grants to beneficiaries.

The friend, Eben Jacobs, apparently wasn't badly hurt. Some of the cyclists who had taken part in the race said that Jacobs had tried to get away, but had been unable to do so. The 47-year-old husband is behind bars and will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court today on a charge of attempted murder.

The Tshwane Metro Council has undertaken not to remove any structures at several gated suburbs in the city, after the suburbs were earlier informed that their lease agreements with the council had expired. This action after the suburbs sought urgent relief in the Pretoria High Court. Several of the dozen or so gated suburbs have existed for years. But a few weeks ago the metro council informed them the structures for access control have to be removed. If they fail to do so within 30 days, the council will remove them. The matter was taken off the urgent court roll after the metro council filed new affidavits. They oppose the application. They have however agreed not to remove any of the structures at the suburbs in question, until the matter has been settled. The gated suburbs are located mostly in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.

Police in Canada say they have caught the world's most prolific bike thief. The Guardian reports that officers recovered 2 865 stolen bicycles from the owner of a Toronto bike shop. Igor Kenk, 49, is awaiting trial on 58 charges of theft, attempted theft, possession of stolen goods and possession of burglary tools. He was arrested after Toronto police, noticing that bike theft had spiked sharply in June, planted bicycles on the streets and watched to see who stole them. When police raided the Bicycle Clinic, the shop was so jam-packed that the fire service had to remove the upper-floor windows and lower the bikes out by rope. Two hundred more bikes were later seized in Kenk's home, along with large quantities of drugs, in a smart neighbourhood in Toronto. Ten landlords around the city also reported that they had rented garages to Kenk, which were chock-full of bikes. About 15 000 people have visited the police station garage where the vast collection was taken, hoping to pick out their own lost bikes. About 500 people had so far been reunited with their bicycles, Toronto police officers have said.

A career change with a difference is on offer from Britain's Antarctic Survey organisation, which is urgently seeking to hire a plumber and an electrician for the remote research station of Bird Island in the South Atlantic, more than 1 000 kilometres south of the Falkland Islands. Applicants prepared to endure solitude in freezing conditions of around minus 20 degrees Celsius are expected to provide the mechanical and electrical maintenance of the station where scientists are studying the behaviour of penguins, seals and albatrosses. While it will be impossible to augment the annual salary of about R310 000 with call-out charges, accommodation will be free and living costs will be next to nothing, the survey says in its advert for the posts which have a duration of between five and 18 months. Stunning scenery is guaranteed, while applicants are expected to fill their TV-free leisure time with cooking and baking bread, and indulge in pastimes such as walking, skiing, snowboarding and learning languages.

An Australian fisherman bitten by a shark while trawling for prawns at sea made a 20-hour dash for hospital, only to have his boat run aground within sight of land. Quentin Gorrell was eventually picked up by the police in a dinghy and brought to hospital, he told the NT News newspaper in Darwin on Thursday. The shark bit Gorrell on the hand, ripping tendons in his index finger to the bone, as he untangled it from nets on a prawn trawler off the coast of northern Australia. The attack happened on Monday near Croker Island northeast of Darwin in the Northern Territory, but Gorrell took 20 hours sailing to reach Darwin, only to run aground on low-tide mudflats.

A father who used his 11-year-old son to break into a neighbour's flat in the Moot, has been arrested with the youngster. The 46-year-old father lives next to the block of flats with his family. Captain Jan Legoabe said the father apparently helped the boy climb over the fence of the block of flats on Friday. The boy gained entrance through the roof of the flat and he and his father stole a TV set, a DVD player and a video machine. Police were later tipped off that the father and son had sold the goods at a shop in the area. Legoabe said the owner of the shop kept a record of every client's personal information and could provide the police with the suspect's name and identity number. The son was released into his mother's care a few hours later, but the father remains in custody and is due to appear in court soon.

A myna bird managed to shut up two noisy parrots in China - by learning to miaow like a cat. Bird owner Mr Jiang, of Nanjing, bought the myna and taught it to speak in order to attract business. The Yangtse Evening Post reports that all went well - until he bought two parrots and put them in a cage next to the myna. Jiang said the two parrots were very talkative, and their chattering made the myna upset and angry. It began jumping frenetically in its cage after the two parrots arrived. Then the myna noticed that when a neighbouring cat came and miaowed, the parrots suddenly got very quiet, he explained. The myna bird learnt to imitate cats miaowing, and did it many times a day. Whenever the parrots got too noisy, the myna would call their bluff by mimicking the cat, and the parrots kept quiet.
