Duisende jonges by Jesus-revolusie in Pta
Beeld, May 18 2008 08:04:25:093PM - (SA)

A woman was locked in her own freezer for nearly an hour by robbers who ransacked her house, police said. Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said the woman had been alone in her house in Durban's Lotus Park suburb when she was confronted by three armed men. When her family returned from shopping they found a ransacked house, but not the woman. One of the family heard a faint knocking from the deep freeze and the woman was discovered, freezing and shivering. Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the woman was taken to hospital and was being treated for hypothermia.

A teenager with cancer scared off a gang of thugs on Wednesday with three shots from his father's revolver. Three robbers broke open the front gate, the security gate and the front door of the Besters' home in Wierda Park, Centurion, about 10:30 on Wednesday. Marc, 17, who has leukaemia, had been sleeping after a setback the previous night with his cancer. He was awakened by the housekeeper and he grabbed pepper spray and ran into one of the robbers in the passage. The robber told him to lie down on the floor and proceeded to steal his cellphone and a laptop that he received from the Reach for a Dream Foundation. Marce was able to slip unnoticed to his fathers room, unlocked the safe, took out his father's firearm and loaded it. He then fired three shots and the robbers took off. Inspector Ilze Jones said the robbers fled in a dark grey Nissan Micra without number plates.

There is such a thing as a considerate car thief - one who will spare no effort to return the contents of your car to you. All you have to do is pay for most of the postage. Three years ago when Hein Kuhn and his family were still living in Kempton Park on the East Rand, thieves stole his new car. The insurance company paid off only the debt on the car. The Kuhns moved from the East Rand to Klerksdorp in March this year, but were keeping their old postal address in Kempton Park until the end of the year. Last weekend friends phoned to say there was a registered package for them but they had to pay R10.30 because there werent enough stamps on the envelope. To their astonishment, the envelope contained items that had been in the car when it was stolen, including family photos, Kuhn's matric and college certificates, postal items and even unopened letters. All the things had been in the stolen car and in his briefcase.

A huge interest rate shock awaits South Africans as the monetary authorities consider hiking rates by another 200 basis points. Most economists have predicted rates only to increase - at most - by 100 basis points. But South African Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni said on Wednesday that he and his colleagues had discussed the impact on the economy of raising the bank's official repo rate by 200 basis points. This will take the repo rate to 13.5% and the prime rate, which banks charge their own customers, to 17%. Interest rates have already been increased nine times since June 2006. The prime rate peaked at 25.5% in 1998, but South Africans currently have a much greater debt load. Debt now represents almost 78% of households' disposable income, compared to less than 60% a decade ago.

South Africa has experienced the highest rate of food price inflation since January 2003, according to the National Agricultural Marketing Council in its quarterly food price monitor. From April 2007 to April 2008 the increase in the Consumer Food Price, as reported by Stats SA, was 15,7 percent. Food categories that made the highest contribution included grain products, milk, cheese and eggs, fats and oils, fruit, nuts and vegetables. The price of brown bread increased by 21,58 percent and that of white by 26,37 percent. The prices of a 5kg bag of super and special maize meal increased by 5,23 percent and 5,66 percent respectively. The council said this was within the inflation band, which meant some relief for the poor who relied on maize meal as a staple.

Sheldean Human verdict:
Jordaan tree op met 'voorbedagte rade'

Jun 03 2008 08:10:18:540AM - (SA)

A Limpopo agricultural union is offering to train ordinary South Africans to make bio-diesel to beat rising fuel prices. Dries Joubert, chairperson of the northern branch of the Transvaal Agricultural Union, TAU-SA North, said on Tuesday the union had received many requests from members of the public who want to learn to make their own fuel. He makes bio-diesel from old cooking oil, which he collects from take-away outlets.

TONGUELESS MAN ARRESTED

Police have tracked down a man whose tongue is believed to have been bitten off when he allegedly raped a woman last month. The 36-year-old man from Umjindini outside Barberton was not asked to plead to rape when he appeared in Barberton Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. He was remanded until June 23 for further investigation. He was arrested at home on Sa ay when police received information that there was a man with no tongue living there. Constable Jabu Ndubane said police found that he was not only wanted for rape, but for skipping bail on a housebreaking and robbery case that took place in 2006.

A remorseful American has surprised German police by sending them 100 (about R700) to cover a 12-year-old parking fine. Police in Cologne said the woman, whom they identified only as Julie H, sent them a handwritten confession to her failure to pay the DM60 fine, incurred in August 1996. Police said they had sent a letter thanking Julie H for the letter, and returned the cheque. They said it was impossible to figure out exactly where the woman had parked her rented car during her family's holiday. In any case, the statute of limitations on the offence had expired 11 years ago.

Petrol prices could reach R14 a litre in the next year, forcing some service stations out of business, negatively impacting on the economy and keeping motorists off the road. That is a very scary number. And the scariest part is that it is not impossible, those are not ridiculous estimates, said Peter Morgan, the chief executive of the Fuel Retailers' Association. He estimates that petrol could cost up to R14 and diesel could go up to R16 a litre by next year, driven up by three factors: the weakening rand, the increasing price of brent crude and the high premium paid by traders. Iraj Abedian, economist and chief executive of Pan African Investment and Research Services, said political instability in the Middle East, Nigeria and Latin America was the main reason for the soaring fuel price. The consequences would be inflation and high interest rates, he said, as well as a change in lifestyle for most motorists. He said that while it was possible for prices to reach R14 or R16 a litre in the next year, he doubted they would stay that high consistently.

Archaeologists in Jordan have unearthed what they claim is the world's first church, dating back almost 2 000 years, The Jordan Times reported on Tuesday. The head of Jordan's Rihab Centre for Archaeological Studies, Abdul Qader Hussan said it was uncovered under Saint Georgeous Church, which itself dates back to 230 AD, in Rihab in northern Jordan near the Syrian border. They have evidence to believe this church sheltered the early Christians: the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ.

No other African country's postal service had been blacklisted by Amazon, Business Day said.

Prisoners will no longer have the same privileges they have grown accustomed to if the parliamentary portfolio committee on correctional services has its way. The Department of Correctional Services is currently reviewing privileges in prisons. The departments portfolio committee has demanded that radio and television in prison should come to an end. Another privilege that should be done away with is the unlimited access to telephones. However, the department has raised the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Offenders, saying access to some privileges cannot be entirely removed. The department will now have to present its policy review on privileges to the committee.
